I tried to rate the movies in their own con...Dave,

I tried to rate the movies in their own context, not "against" one another. That said, if I had the choice to watch either Slumdog or Marley right now, I'd choose the latter, yes.

Slumdog Millionaire was this weird beast of a viral marketing campaign where no one really knew what it was they were going to see when they walked in the theater, but everyone heard it was something about Bombay and that it was amazing.

In many ways, this should have been the "perfect" movie for me. I love love love dorky guys trying to get the hot girl movies. Some of my favorite movies of all time include Punch-Drunk Love, Moulin Rouge, Adaptation, and Annie Hall. I love movies that are cute and quirky and all about romance.

Add to this the fact that my dad was born & raised in Bombay, and you've got my perfect movie.

Except the love story was overwhelmingly flat. If you divide this movie into quarters, I can sum the experience up by saying, 1st three-quarters are a fascinating and fast look at the life of street life in India, last quarter is the most cheesy, unbelievable, who-cares-about-this-plot-line garbage.

For all those saying, "But it was unique!" Um, no it wasn't. The street scenes are shot-for-shot like those in City of God, a significantly better film, and one that has only gotten more prominent since the time of its release. Slumdog will do the opposite, book it. Ten years from now, it will not be known as one of the best films of our time.Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01249928498206856167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2469423763503103632.post-6789327289883004252009-04-29T22:25:00.000-07:002009-04-29T22:25:00.000-07:00Why was Slumdog rated so weakly? Marley and Me bet...Why was Slumdog rated so weakly? Marley and Me better than Slumdog, really? :)

All good recs, none of which I have seen. Thanks for the reviews, I'm especially excited about Frost/Nixon as I just saw All the President's Men for the first time, which was pretty amazing.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02836713793470393978noreply@blogger.com
